ArchiCAD is a free Windows-based 3D design application which can be used for a number of purposes, including architecture and structural engineering. For the past few months I have been using this program to build models of my own projects and was interested in learning more about it. There are a few great tutorials out there on how to use it but I'm going to add one on some useful tips on how to make your designs last longer. Although many ArchiCAD users do not often revise their designs, keeping old versions, or revisions, is a very important part of the design process. It allows you to go back to previous states and check the differences between them which helps you identify changes in your design. In addition, there are situations where it's necessary to make a change or two before the design is finalised and this can be accomplished by going back to an earlier revision. Lastly, sometimes you need to make a change to an existing model before something else is done which cannot be done over the top of it. Sometimes the changes to your design are only very slight, but sometimes they can be quite major. The main reason for working on old revisions is to understand how the design has progressed since you first started working on it. It is always advisable to work on an old revision whenever you think you might need extra information. Working on earlier revisions also allows you to see how your original design evolved through many stages before it was finally completed or abandoned completely. It is not unusual for designers to go back and forth between different revisions of their designs during development, especially when they are working with other people who may have different opinions about things that need changing. There are several ways to go back and forth between revisions. The first way is to use the Table of Revisions (Fig A). This table shows you information about each revision, including its description, date of creation, date of saving and the last person who saved it. You can use this table to go back and forth between revisions by double-clicking on any revision listed in it. By clicking on the Previous button you will go to an earlier revision while clicking on the Next button will move you forward to a later revision. Another way is by using the old versions folder which is located in your current project directory (). In general you can access this folder from anywhere by using the Windows explorer program. In the old versions folder you will find a list of all your previous revisions. Each revision is listed by date and revision number. You can also go back and forth between revisions by double-clicking on a revision listed in the old versions folder. It's also possible to browse through your old revisions directly from ArchiCAD if your project is saved as a CADimage file (file extension .dci). The CADimage format was introduced in ArchiCAD version 12 as a way to store project files containing multiple drawing sheets and their data.
