Kannada Rathi Kathegalu ಕನ್ನಡ ರಾಠ _____ When it comes to Indian languages, Telugu and Kannada are known to be the most ancient ones, and while their scripts are very different, both languages have originated from Tamil. There is a fair amount of evidence which points out that Telugu dates back to an era before Kanarese existed. The earliest mention of Telugu is “Ekavali Prabandham” written by Maharshi Gaudapadacharya in the 8th century C.E. It is believed that Telugu developed from the language of Andhra Naadu, an area in the north of the present day Telangana region. The script used for Kannada is known as the “Kannada Lipi” or “Old Kannada”. It can be dated back to approximately 450 C.E., which is considered to be the oldest available document written entirely in Kannada along with its earliest reference in literature, found in ‘Shabaraashaapaada’ by King Shabaraaya, who ruled Kaundinyapura (the modern Mysore) during that time. This particular document mentions the existence of seven schools in Kannada. There is also an oral tradition which dates back to 800 C.E. which says that Maharishi Nandi (the 12th century saint) lived in Kannada-country (Karnataka). The Tamil language has the earliest spread of vocabulary; there are many words in common with Tamil and Malayalam. However, Sanskrit forms a strong base for all three languages, with Kannada borrowing words like “dharmam” (dharma), “prabhatham” (priest), “shadjam”(shadu) and many more from Sanskrit. Kannada, like Telugu, is a Dravidian language. It is written using the Kannada Lipi (Old Kannada). The Old Kannada script was initially used to write Sanskrit. Later, it was employed to write the local language (Kannada) when writing Kannada came into fashion during the reign of King “Ranna” in the 10th century C.E. An interesting fact about this script is that unlike in most other Indian scripts, in which vowels are specified with symbols attached to consonants, vowels are written as independent letters in Old Kannada. However, consonant clusters are pre-specified. There is a total of 48 letters in this script, out of which the characters “Ka” and “Ta” sometimes collapse into each other. This phenomenon is also found in the Telugu script. Inscriptions have been found on statues and copper plates dating back to between 350-550 C.E., which is a fairly long span for an ancient language. 96cfa1e7782015
